Klyde Warren Park covers part of a multi-lane highway in downtown Dallas with a “vegetation cap. In this way, the architects tried to reconnect the downtown area and the neighboring Arts District.
The two-hectare site includes a concert and playground, a restaurant, a dog park, a spacious lawn, and a native flora garden.
Construction of the park was funded by public and private partnerships, including $20 million in bond funds from the city of Dallas, $20 million in highway funds from the state and federal government through TxDOT, and nearly $50 million in private donations. The largest contributor was businessman Kelsey Warren, who invested $10 million in the project; the gift gave him the right to name the park after his nine-year-old son. In March 2009, the park was selected to receive $16.7 million in stimulus funds specifically earmarked for transportation facilities.
Klyde Warren Park is privately managed and programmed by the Woodall Rogers Foundation. Park improvements and 1,300 annual events and programs are paid for by private donations collected by the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation. The Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation continues to raise donations to fund operations, programming and construction of new infrastructure.
